Taiwan-Malaysia Bilateral Lactic Acid Bacteria International Webinar 2021 - Creating a New International Opportunity for the Taiwan’s Healthcare Industry

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the MSLAB-TALAB International Webinar 2021 was successfully held on 15th July 2021 enthusiastically. More than 120 domestic and foreign probiotic production officers and more than 500 researchers met to share and discuss lactic acid bacteria (LAB) prospects and the market potential of LAB application in anti-aging, female health care, and pet medicine.

The international webinar was organized by the Taiwan Association for Lactic Acid Bacteria (TALAB) and the Malaysian Society for Lactic Acid Bacteria (MSLAB) and sponsored by the MICE International Conference project grant from the Taipei City Tourism and Communication Bureau. The international online seminar was conducted across the border to have an open and in-depth discussion on LAB research, education and industry. Furthermore, the event promoted the cooperation between a few universities in Malaysia and Taiwan, including the National Taiwan University, National Chung Hsing University, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Hong Guang University of Science and Technology, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), UCSI University, Management and Science University, Universiti Teknologi MARA and Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI). In addition, more than 80 domestic and foreign LAB related companies attended the webinar, strengthening the LAB industry of the two countries in Asia and throughout the world.

New Research and Development Trends of LAB in Anti-Ageing and Parkinson Disease Prevention

In response to the market demand for healthy ageing, Prof. Dr. Ming Xian Wu, the Dean of the Taiwan University Hospital, took the lead in sharing the prospect of microbial treatments, "Bacterial Therapy: From Probiotics to Microbiome-Based Drugs". Dr. Lin Shan from the Grape King Biotech discussed the latest development of anti-aging LAB from the industrial perspective. According to Dr. Lin’s findings, the application of Lactobacillus plantarum GKM3 helps to delay aging, prevent osteoporosis and muscle deficiency and other ageing-related diseases, which can be applied to the development of elderly related health food. On the other hand, Professor Dr. Ying-Chieh Tsai, Professor Chair of Industry at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, discussed the potential of psychoactive probiotic PS128 in the prevention of Parkinson's disease.

Modern Diseases: Applications of Lactic Acid Bacteria in Depression, Women’s Health, and Gastrointestinal Health

From the National Oceanic University of Taiwan, Professor Guo Zhen Tsai shared on applying FPA 3709 LAB strains isolated from the intestines of fish in the fermentation of black soybean milk, which can effectively improve the symptoms of depression in rats. Next, Professor Chun-Ying Wu, President of the Taiwan Microbiota Consortium from the National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, shared the relationship between gut microbiota and metabolic diseases. He demonstrated the potential of faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) to improve complex metabolic disorders. Finally, Associate Professor Dr. Leslie Thian Lung Than from the Universiti Putra Malaysia presented LAB's potential as a solution to suppress vaginal infections. Lactobacillus can regulate and restore a balanced vaginal microbiome to maintain vaginal health and act as an adjuvant to prevent vaginal infection.

Trends and Developing New Applications of LAB in the Infant and Pet Care Industry

Associate Professor Dr. Satoshi Hachimura from the University of Tokyo, Japan, has shown the relationship between LAB and intestinal immunomodulation. According to Dr. Satoshi, the production of IgA is an essential feature of the intestinal immune response. LAB can enhance intestinal IgA production and prevent infection. Thus, the intestinal immune system may be affected by the regulation of LAB. Next, professor Colin Hill from the University College Cork in Ireland discussed the bacteriocins produced by LAB and the development of LAB in food and veterinary medicine. Next, professor Maria Rescigno from the University of Humanitas, Italy, presented on "Postbiotics: New frontiers in health care". Postbiotics are the metabolites released by probiotics during food fermentation. It is a well-established fact that fermented infant formula milk powder and standard formula milk powder could affect the natural microbiota of newborns. Based on her study, the metabolome found in fermented formula milk is similar to breast milk, which can regulate the immunity and intestinal microflora balance.

This international seminar has allowed Taiwan and Malaysia to conduct in-depth and substantive exchanges on the topic of LAB. Through the international cooperation of both countries, Taiwan's visibility and the applications of these tiny remarkable LAB in human and animal health can be promoted globally.

PRESIDENT

MALAYSIAN SOCIETY FOR LACTIC ACID BACTERIA (MSLAB)

Prof. Dr. Hooi Ling Foo

On behalf of the Organising Committee, I take great pleasure and honour to welcome you to the first joint webinar of the Malaysian Society for Lactic Acid Bacteria (MSLAB) with the Taiwan Association for Lactic Acid Bacteria (TALAB). Both societies are affiliated with the Asian Federation of Societies for Lactic Acid bacteria (AFSLAB), which has members from all over Asia, such as China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam besides MSLAB and TALAB. MSLAB was initiated as a Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) interest research group in Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), entrusted by AFSLAB.to host the second International Symposium for Lactic Acid Bacteria in 2010. MSLAB has officially registered as a society in 2014, following the success of the symposium. It is the mission of MSLAB to promote, advance and disseminate the scientific knowledge of LAB research and related subjects in Malaysia mainly.

On behalf of MSLAB, we are pleased to host the inaugural webinar with TALAB to bring you six very prominent scientists from around the globe who will share their insights on the different impacts of LAB in our daily life. LAB has been involved in food fermentation for centuries and is amongst the first bacteria discovered by Joseph Lister back in 1875. Later, LAB was associated with the well-known term “Probiotics”, coined in the 1960s, and is now widely claimed to promote various health benefits, such as gut, skin, liver, lung and brain health. Since then, a few “-biotics” terms that are closely related to probiotics has been suggested, for instances ‘Prebiotic” and “Synbiotics”. In addition, these remarkable bacteria also produce a variety of antimicrobial compounds such as bacteriocins and other unique bioactive metabolites, and the term “Postbiotic” and “Paraprobiotic” were suggested around the 2010s to describe the bioactive metabolites produced by the LAB.

I am confident that this webinar will shed insights on current topics of interest on this “old” bacteria, but whose importance never grows old. More impactful, exciting and emerging valuable roles of LAB are being uncovered. I would like to take this opportunity to thank TALAB for co-organising this webinar and hope that both MSLAB and TALAB will have more collaborations in the future.

I would also like to extend my special gratitude to the invited speakers, special partners-our sponsors and supporters, co-organisers and all participants for their support for making this webinar a success. I wish you all a pleasant and fulfilling scientific sharing and interaction in the MSLAB-TALAB international webinar 2021.

PRESIDENT

TAIWAN ASSOCIATION FOR LACTIC ACID BACTERIA (TALAB)

Dr. Chin-Chu Chen

I would like express my gratitude for the invitation that I received from MSLAB for co-organizing this webinar together. It is a pleasure to welcome all of you to join the first joint webinar of the Malaysian Society for Lactic Acid Bacteria (MSLAB) with the Taiwan Association for Lactic Acid Bacteria (TALAB) which will be held on 15th July 2021. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it seems difficult to hold the conference in a traditional format. Therefore, with the consensus based on two-sides negotiation, TALAB and MSLAB are holding the conference in an online virtual format. TALAB and MSLAB are both affiliated with the Asian Federation of Societies for Lactic Acid bacteria (AFSLAB), which has members from all over Asia such as Korea, Japan, China, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, India and Iran. Following the establishment of AFSLAB in 2002, TALAB was established in 2003 to initiate and stimulate research on Lactic Acid Bacteria and their applications. Currently, there are more than 200 members in TALAB. Our mission in TALAB is to disseminate the scientific knowledge and to strengthen the network among international researchers as well as industrial partners so we can contribute to the human’s health and the importance of microbiology science.

Traditionally, lactobacilli, bifidobacteria, and other lactic acid-producing bacteria (LAB) have been used as probiotics. Prebiotics are used to stimulate the growth of these and other bacterial groups directly or indirectly through crossfeeding interactions. Synbiotics are a combination of probiotics and prebiotics that elicit a health benefit. Postbiotics are the metabolites of probiotics. In this post pandemic era, a new range of microorganisms from human microbiomes with potential health benefits are being developed as “next-generation probiotics”. Together, they all serve as promising candidate interventions for the management of human health. On behalf of TALAB, we have invited very prominent scientists in this area from around the globe who will present at this conference as invited speakers.

Although we cannot face with each other and chat like before, I believe that by hosting in this webinar event together with MSLAB, we can still exchange and discuss the latest research outcomes and deepen our passion in probiotic research. Together let us accelerate the exchange of ideas and communicate the latest scientific topics on lactic acid bacteria and related microbes.

Lastly, I would like to extend my special gratitude to the invited distinguish speakers, special partners, sponsors and all participants for their continuous support and advice for making this webinar a success. I look forward to seeing you all at MSLAB-TALAB International Webinar 2021.
